It's the question everyone asks when opening their parents' attic or clearing out a grandparent's home. You come across an old radio, you find it beautiful, but you have absolutely no idea whether it's worth 15 euros or 500 euros. The honest answer: it depends on five criteria, and most people get wrong which ones actually matter.
First criterion: brand and model
Everyone assumes age is the number one factor. It isn't. A run-of-the-mill 1935 radio is often worth less than a 1955 set from a prestigious brand. What matters is the brand and, above all, the specific model within that brand's range.
The brands that generate the most interest among collectors and restorers: Telefunken, Grundig and Saba for Germany - their 1950s sets are renowned for their build quality and design. On the French side: Radiola, Ducretet-Thomson, Schneider, Sonora, Océanic. These brands produced iconic models that enthusiasts actively seek out.
Philips is harder to categorise: the brand produced just as many exceptional models as it did very ordinary ones. The value of a Philips set really depends on the specific model.
Unknown brands or sets without an identification plate are generally worth little, unless the design is truly exceptional.
Second criterion: design and era
The 1930s to mid-1950s represent the golden age of radio aesthetics. Three styles concentrate demand:
Art Deco from the 1930s-40s: rounded forms, coloured Bakelite or fine wood cabinets, finely engraved dials. These pieces are considered genuine collector's objects in their own right. A beautiful Art Deco set in black or bordeaux Bakelite, in good condition, can easily reach 200 to 600 euros.
The Streamline style of the late 1940s-50s: clean lines, dark wood cabinets with fabric grilles, illuminated frequency-scale dials in colour. This is probably the most popular style among vintage décor enthusiasts. A living room "radio cabinet" from this period, with its large walnut case and green or orange dial, can be worth between 150 and 400 euros.
Transistor radios from the 1960s are also highly sought after for their pop character and vibrant colours. Grundig Boy, Telefunken Bajazzo and Japanese Hitachi transistor models in immaculate condition regularly fetch 80 to 200 euros.
Third criterion: cabinet condition
This is often where things fall short. Period electronics are almost always non-functional - buyers expect this and it doesn't really affect the price. The condition of the wooden cabinet, however, is decisive.
What drives value down: loose or missing veneer, deep cracks in the wood, moisture or mould damage, missing or replaced knobs, torn or stained grille fabric, cracked or yellowed dials. Each of these defects reduces value all the more so when restoration is complex.
What preserves or increases value: a solid wooden cabinet with all its original parts, an intact illuminated dial (even non-functional), original Bakelite knobs, clean grille fabric, the absence of clumsy amateur repairs. A set that has never been touched, even if covered in dust, is often worth more than one that has been "cleaned" by someone using the wrong products.
Fourth criterion: model rarity
Some models were produced in the millions. Others were premium models manufactured in limited quantities. Rarity has an enormous influence on auction prices and within collector circles.
How do you know if your model is rare? The identification plate on the back of the set generally shows the model number. A quick search on vintage radio collector forums (several exist in English) or on eBay completed listings will give you an idea of the prices achieved.
Be cautious with estimates found on auction websites: the prices displayed are often asking prices, not achieved prices. Look at sales that were actually completed.
Realistic price ranges in 2026
To give you a concrete reference point, here are the ranges we currently observe in the market:
Living room TSF sets from the 1935-55 period, major brands, cabinet in good condition: between 120 and 500 euros depending on brand and model. Exceptional pieces (Telefunken Andante, Grundig 5050, Radiola top models) can exceed 600 euros among collectors. More common sets or those with defects: 30 to 100 euros.
1960s transistor radios in good condition: 50 to 200 euros for desirable brands. Popular Japanese models (Sony, Hitachi): 30 to 80 euros. A transistor radio with no recognised brand or in poor condition: under 30 euros.
1970s plastic sets: generally 10 to 40 euros, unless the design is truly remarkable.
1980s boomboxes from major brands (Sharp, JVC, Toshiba) in working order: 80 to 300 euros depending on the model. The boombox market has been growing strongly for several years.

How to identify your model precisely
Before searching for anything, find the identification plate on your set. It is usually screwed to the back or the underside of the cabinet. It shows the brand, the model (a combination of letters and numbers), the power supply voltage and sometimes the year of manufacture.
With this information, you can consult collector resources online - the Radiomuseum.org website is a worldwide reference cataloguing thousands of models with their history and sometimes their market value. For French radios, the association of the same name is also a valuable source.
If the plate is illegible or missing, a clear photo taken from several angles posted in an enthusiast forum will generally get you an answer within a few hours. The vintage radio community is passionate and very welcoming.
